The SAP HANA Migration Cockpit is the official migration tool for greenfield or bluefield approaches, as it provides a simplified and efficient way to transfer master and transaction data into your new SAP S/4 HANA system.
Designed for Data Migration
The Migration Cockpit is an Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) tool from SAP, succeeding the older LSMW (Legacy System Migration Workbench). It is primarily designed for the initial load of data during a new implementation or a selective data transition.
- Greenfield Implementation: This approach involves a complete new installation of SAP S/4 HANA, often used when a company wants to redefine its business processes and eliminate legacy customizations. The Migration Cockpit is essential here for transferring only the relevant, clean master and transactional data from the old system(s) to the new environment.
- Bluefield/Selective Data Transition: This is a hybrid approach, combining the speed of an upgrade with the selective transformation of a new implementation. It allows you to migrate specific data, processes, and configurations while dropping historical baggage. The Migration Cockpit supports this by enabling selective data transfer, which aligns well with the “Clean Core” principle of SAP S/4 HANA.
Key Features and Process
The tool simplifies the migration process through several key features:
- Preconfigured Migration Objects: SAP provides numerous predefined templates (migration objects) for various types of data, such as customers, vendors, materials, and G/L accounts, based on SAP best practices.
- Automated Mapping: It features automatic mapping between the source structure (your legacy data) and the target structure (SAP S/4 HANA).
- User-Friendly Interface: The Cockpit is available as a Fiori app, offering a guided, step-by-step process that often requires no programming knowledge for standard data loads.
The data migration generally follows these steps:
- Select Migration Objects: Choose the data objects (e.g., G/L Account, Customer) you need to migrate.
- Select Transfer Method: You can choose from three main scenarios:
- Files (e.g., Excel XML templates): Download a template, fill it with your legacy data, and upload the file.
- Staging Tables: Load your data into temporary database tables before it is transferred to S/4 HANA.
- Direct Transfer (from ECC systems): Connect directly to a source ECC system with RFC (Remote Function Call) and transfer the data. Direct Transfer is available for ECC 6.0 and S/4 HANA 1909 Release.
For bigger dataset staging tables or direct transfers are the optimal solution, whereas file transfer is only feasible for smaller dataset, which don’t exceed 160 MB.
- Validate and Map Data: The Cockpit checks your source data for inconsistencies and helps you map source values to the correct target values in S/4 HANA.
- Simulate Migration: Run a test migration to check all parameters and settings without impacting the target system.
- Migrate Data: Execute the final transfer of data into the new SAP S/4 HANA system.
The SAP HANA Migration Cockpit significantly reduces the effort and complexity associated with moving data to SAP S/4 HANA, making it the standard, out-of-the-box tool for a modern data transition.
