Breaking Changes in S/4 HANA – New general ledger

The new general ledger was introduced in ECC 6.0 and was further improved in S/4 HANA to become the new standard. With the new general ledger in S/4 HANA it’s not only possible to seamlessly integrate FI and CO without using reconciliation ledgers, there multiple other benefits:

  • Separate posting in FI and CO is history with the new general ledger. In S/4 HANA the posting is completely stored in the universal journal table ACDOCA. This is the single source of truth for all actual data, eliminating data redundancy and ensuring real-time consistency between financial and management accounting.
  • Document Splitting: Segment reporting and Profit-Center based reporting is possible at any time without the need for special period-end closing runs. In Classic GL, this was difficult and often only possible through manual or special steps. The core feature enabling this is Document Splitting, which ensures that every document, including vendor/customer postings, has a balanced view across dimensions like Profit Center and Segment, allowing for real-time segment balance sheets.
  • Simplified Parallel Accounting: Parallel ledgers can be used to comply with different accounting principles (e.g. GAAP, IFRS). This Ledger Approach replaces the complex Account Approach often used in Classic GL. You can define a Leading Ledger and one or more Non-Leading Ledgers to manage all necessary accounting standards within the same system and master data.
  • Easier extensibility of the central sum table FAGLFLEXT by customer-defined fields: The structure of ACDOCA is designed to be highly flexible, making it much simpler to add custom fields (e.g., specific costing or reporting dimensions) without complex modifications across multiple tables.
  • Modern User Experience: S/4 HANA is shipped with Fiori Apps that leverage the real-time data from ACDOCA. Fiori apps provide an intuitive, role-based user experience for essential accounting tasks, planning, and real-time reporting. Examples include the Manage Journal Entries app and various Profitability Analysis reports that access the unified data structure instantly.
  • Fast Period Closing: The real-time integration, unified data in ACDOCA, and automated Document Splitting collectively enable a true “Fast Close”. Since reconciliation tasks and complex data transfers between FI and CO are eliminated, the time required for period-end and year-end closing is drastically reduced, allowing for quicker decision-making.

Conclusion

The New General Ledger in S/4HANA is the ideal solution for companies that prioritize both efficiency gains and compliance. The elimination of redundant data through the Universal Journal (ACDOCA), the complete integration of FI and CO, and the use of parallel ledgers enable a true Fast Close. This not only simplifies recurring tasks but also ensures seamless adherence to complex, global accounting standards by making audit-proof segment reports and financial statements available at the touch of a button at any time.
